Game Jam #7 - Bubble Bobble Remake

I am particularly excited about this little Game Jam because the theme for Game Jam number 7 is: Make your own version of the old classic (one of my all time favorite games back in the day): Bubble Bobble! If you haven’t played it before check out this video. Feel free to experiment with adding your own, unique ideas! :wink: One playable level will suffice as an entry.

Assets to help you get started are free to download for the next 5 days so grab them now and get coding!

Competition details/rules:

  • 1 entry per developer/team
  • Must incorporate 2 or more assets stated above.
  • You may use other assets you own/license (including non Bitgem assets).
  • Entry must be playable in browser. Entries close 15th of June 2015.

I really like this theme, it’s one of my favourite game i play when i’m was child :smile: . I come back here this afternoon with images of my game.

Game Build v.1

  1. Move with the left and right arrow keys.
  2. Jump with the up arrow key.
  3. Space Bar shoots bubbles.
  4. Bubbles will burst after 6 seconds, unless hit by the player with an enemy inside.
  5. Bubbles will engulf an enemy if one is hit.
  6. A fruit reward pops out of a bubble if an enemy is inside the bubble.
  7. 10 points is rewarded per enemy killed.
  8. No way to die yet. Only one level.
  9. The Player can get on top of bubbles.

Wow that was incredibly quick! It’s amazing that it already works as well as it does. It would be nice if the bubbles didn’t feel as solid as they do atm. If it was possible for the player to push them around and popp them like in the original. Also you can currently perform endless double jumps. :slight_smile:

HA! Great update! :slight_smile: It feels a bit like playing in slow motion. I think it would be neat if you could speed the whole thing up a little.

Game v.1.2

  1. No more double jumping!
  2. Bubbles can be moved around.
  3. Bubbles look more like bubbles.
  4. There are blocking platforms and one-way platforms.
  5. Lives UI.
  6. Simple AI move back and forth.
  7. Die animations and reset, but player never truly dies at the moment.

Haven’t had as much time as I would like to spend on this, but here’s what I have so far!

It’s mostly just basic player movement and animation, as well as a very basic bubble attack.

Also, is it against the rules to use music that we didn’t create ourselves? If so, I’ll remove it!

Game v.1.3

  1. More enemies, some treasure chests, hidden secret, and obstacles.
  2. Player loses a life when hit, but becomes invincible for a couple of seconds on restart.
  3. Run into the treasure chests to open them up.

Oh yeah! Lots of good progress! @Ninja love the 2d/3d mix. the game play feels nice and responsive. It’s fine to use music you didn’t create for the jam.
@JBednez I finally managed to use those bubbles to get up on to all those platforms! :slight_smile:


The bubbles are getting into my blood like “the bends” I think… I had a repetitive dream about Bubble Bobble last night. :neutral_face:

I Don’t want to break the compo rules…

Is it OK to have say 5 smallish levels, still a fast game to complete ( <5 mins ).

Or should I combine them all into one giant level? (will slow game a little)


I interpreted the rules as one playable level was minimum, so I believe you can have as much levels you want.

Oh, and I am working on my entry. Expect a screenshot today!
